What’s your background?
Prior to teacher training, I worked in a secondary school in Wythenshawe for a few years, initially as a Learning Support Assistant before taking on a Pastoral Year Coordinator role.
Why did you decide to go into teaching?
I always had an interest in teaching but wasn't always fully sure. However, after a few years working in a school, I decided it was time to take a leap of faith and give it a chance - I'm certainly glad I did.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting and building positive relationships with students and staff at both my placements. It has been really nice to be surrounded by staff at both placements who are truly passionate about their subject(s) and guide students to be the best they can be. The best part is knowing you are making a difference, where it's the moments where a student finally 'gets it', when they're pleased to see that it's you teaching them, or even when they are upset that you are moving to a new placement school.
Did you get a job at the end of the course
Yes, I was lucky enough to get a job closer to home (Manchester). I'm really looking forward to starting this job; not only due to the location but also being able to teach mainly KS4/5 is a massive bonus.

What were the three best things about the SCITT programme?

The course structure allows you to be immersed in the school experience through two placements, with your first one beginning on the INSET day at your Placement A school. This is invaluable in supporting you to feel part of the school community from day 1.

The Friday sessions - led by teaching experts who deliver sessions on key areas, including Subject Days where you work with your subject peers and Subject Expert. But also getting to catch up with fellow SCITT trainees who are on the same journey; although at different stages, there is a really supportive atmosphere where you can share your experiences from the week.

The supportive network that is in place from Day 1 - from the SCITT team, your subject expert, subject and professional mentor. This means that if you ever need support, you know who you can talk to.
Would you recommend the Cheshire East SCITT to anyone considering a career in teaching?
